2019: Book #12

Tony Dungy is a favorite coach of mine and a great football commentator. With that said, his newest book is just okay. The Soul of a Team: A Modern Day Fable for Winning Teamwork doesn’t quite hit the mark for me.

Dungy has proven he’s a great leader and he’s written some great books in the past. This book has some very good points. It’s a modern-day fable that centers on Dungy acting as a consultant to a fictitious team in Orlando called The Vipers. The team implements Dungy’s S.O.U.L. program and they end up winning the Super Bowl.

Soul stands for:

S Selflessness
OOwnership
UUnity
LLarger purpose

All four focal points are key for great leadership. His leadership lessons are spot on, but the story..the fable…well, it was just okay.

Here are a few good quotes from the book:

“The whole unit has to function well together, or else even the most talented players won’t be able to perform to the best of their abilities.”

“Mercenaries will defeat draftees, but volunteers will crush them both.”

I give the book 3 out of 5 stars.

That’s book #12 for 2019.

40 more to go.

Remember, all leaders are readers.
If you want to be a better leader…be a reader.
