2021: Book #14

Since I was a little boy, I’ve loved dinosaurs.

There’s even a picture in our family photo album of me as a little guy at the Smithsonian mesmerized by all the fossils.

Steve Brusatte’s book, “The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of Their Lost World” is nothing short of a triumph.

After reading the book, I understand the different periods of time that these creatures walked the earth.  I had no idea there were pre-dinosaurs. That had never even crossed my mind.

By using their skeletons, scientists are able to reconstruct what they looked like and even how much they weighed on average.  That leads to how much they would need to eat.  With that knowledge, that begins to unlock what they ate and what kind of system was needed to sustain them.

What happened to them?  Why did they die?

Geology points to an asteroid that landed near the Yucatan peninsula.

Brusatte takes you inside with stories of fossil pirates and some of his own discoveries.

This was a fun and fascinating book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars.
