21 Mar Suffering is Never for Nothing | Elisabeth Elliot
2019: Book #13
“…It’s through the deepest suffering that God taught me the deepest lessons.”
“He can transform something terrible into something wonderful. Suffering is never for nothing.”
Those are just two remarkable quotes from the new book Suffering is Never for Nothing by Elisabeth Elliot. The content of the book has never before been published. The content? It’s encouraging and heart calming. The book is taken from a collection of talks Elliot had given over the years.
Elliot knew suffering: her husband, Jim, was killed as a missionary. Her second husband, Ad, died of cancer. Her third husband, Lars Gren, loved her and stayed by her side through her dementia.
Suffering touches all of our lives. Elliot’s words help us understand suffering and how it is linked to the love of God. It’s a hard concept to grasp, but she manages to explain it well.
How do we cope with suffering? She says, “Just do the next thing.” That’s very good advice.
Here are some quotes from this incredible book:
“…if we don’t ever want to suffer, we must be very careful never to love anything or anybody.”
“The answer I say to you is not an explanation but a person, Jesus Christ.”
“The will of God is love. And love suffers.”
“We’re not adrift in chaos. We’re held in the everlasting arms.”
This is a superb book. It is filled with so much encouragement…read it.
Read it now, if you’re struggling. Read it now, even if life is good, because you will experience suffering one day.
I give the book 5 out of 5 stars.
That’s book #13 for 2019.
