Servant Leadership

Are you serious about building your team?

Do you want to build trusting relationships with your team?

Have you served your team?

If you answered “no” to the last question, it will be harder to do the first two.  The greatest example of a servant leader is Jesus. He left his place at the head of the table to serve His team.  He did this by washing their feet, humbling Himself in their eyes; He served them where they were and with something they needed done.

We are not always in the position to solve everything for our teams.  We can’t always take away frustration or defeats in their everyday lives, but we can serve them. By doing so, we can also love them through the tough times.

You will not be able to do this if you are a self-serving person. You have to look for ways to serve your team.  Is there a task at your station that everyone dreads taking a turn doing?

When I first got to Walk FM,  I discovered a task everyone dreads is cleaning the bathrooms and preparing them for our fundraising week and for the volunteers.  Our station manager began taking care of them before every fundraising week. He was serving his team by doing a task that no one else wanted to do.

Another GM at a PAR station works the annual Turkey Trot 5K every Thanksgiving; he is serving his team by making sure they are home with their families.  Neither of the GM’s have to do the tasks mentioned above, but they are serving their teams and building trust with their teams while building them.

Maybe you can have a meal catered in for your team, for your next meeting.  Wait on them, serve their tables, get them refills, napkins, bring them coffee and dessert.  This brings you down to a personal level.   They will see you as a servant leader, not someone self-serving or someone who sees self as better than everyone.  This will earn their trust, respect, and show them that they are loved and valued.

So, let me ask again…

Are you serious about building your team?

Do you want to build trusting relationships with your team?

Have you served your team?
