2019: Book #9

“Some wake up to an alarm. Some wake up to a calling.”

I love that. I mean LOVE it!

It’s a quote from John Maxwell’s latest book, “Leader Shift: The 11 Essential Changes Every Leader Must Embrace.”

This book has truly helped me as a leader. Not only has it taught me some new things, but it reminded me of leadership principles I need to practice. Every leader should read this book.

Here are a few quotes:

“If you want to be successful as a leader, you need to learn to become comfortable with uncertainty and make shifts continually.”

“Leaders who possess humility are confident, yet feel no need to draw attention to themselves. They are comfortable with themselves, yet acknowledge that they need to improve.”

“Strength and growth come through continuous effort and struggle.”

“You never know if people are really with you until you ask them for commitment.”

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Stop trying to make everyone happy.
  • My happiness isn’t determined by if everyone else is happy.
  • I’m here to fulfill the mission and vision, not be popular.

I know these things and I practice them. Even so, we all want to be liked and loved. Leadership is often lonely, but the job is its own lesson in servant leadership. What we do is about the mission, the vision, and the team. It’s not about you or me.

It’s also critically important to remember that people only follow because they want to do so. You can’t force people to follow you. They’ll quit. Therefore, you must be a leader of integrity. Keep your word. Cast a vision. Invest in others. People will follow that model. Position doesn’t give you authority— integrity does.

This book is full of so much wisdom. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. It’s a critical read for leaders.

That’s book #9 for 2019.
43 more to go.

Remember, all leaders are readers.
If you want to be a better leader…be a reader.
