2020: Book #3

“At no point in this life will we believe perfectly…”

“God doesn’t need to earn my respect. His very existence is the qualification for my utter respect. He is not authoritarian in any petty sense of the term. He is authority itself, the essence of perfect, flawless authority. To disobey is to deny this about him.”

“Americans especially are wired for quick fixes and “just tell me what I need to know so I can get going.” Belief doesn’t work that way. Actually, most things don’t work that way; those lists are shortcuts that actually truncate true effectiveness by ripping the heart and understanding out of it.”

“The downside to cultural Christianity is that the facade of morality hides the necessity for real transformation in people’s hearts. When all the people around you claim to be Christian, it is difficult to convince them that their hearts need to change. They don’t truly believe, but they don’t rightly know the difference.”

Those are just four quotes from one of the greatest books I’ve ever read.

Barnabas Piper, son of John Piper, has written a book that is nothing short of food for the soul.

I struggle with belief.
You know that if you’ve followed me for any amount of time.

Help My Unbelief: Why Doubt is not the Enemy of Faith by Barnabas Piper is well worth your time and will increase your faith.

He doesn’t answer every question or remove all the doubt, but he reminds us that belief is a process. We follow Jesus on a path that lasts a lifetime.  We’ll discover grace and mercy for the ups and downs of that path.

Superb book.

Seriously, one of my all-time favorites.

That’s book #3 for 2020.
49 more books to go to hit 52 for the year.
