15 Feb Habits of Grace: Enjoying Jesus through the Spiritual Disciplines | Dave Mathis
2021: Book #12
“Hearing the word of the cross, and preaching it to ourselves, is the central strategy for sinners in the fight for joy.”
“What is it that is capturing your idle thoughts? What fear or frustration is filling your spare moments? Will you just listen to yourself, or will you start talking?”
“…he also sustains the whole of our Christian lies, from day one to that day, in his matchless grace.”
“And wonder of wonders, not only does he express himself and bid us hear his voice, but he wants to hear ours. The speaking God not only has spoken, but he also listens – he stops, he stoops, he wants to hear from you. He stands ready to hear your voice.”
Those quotes are from the book “Habits of Grace: Enjoying Jesus through the Spiritual Disciplines” by David Mathis.
Mathis is on staff at Desiring God and Bethlehem College & Seminary.
Having that information, you can expect plenty of quotes from John Piper.
The book is refreshing.
It is simple.
Mathis draws you back to the basics on how to know and commune with God.
I highly recommend it to all followers of Jesus.
My one criticism is the over-quoting of John Piper.
I don’t have an issue with Piper; it just seems the book could have been sourced from a variety of voices instead of just that main one.
4 out of 5 stars.
