2020: Book #1

There are parts that are incredible.

Moving. Stirring. Convicting.

Then, there’s a chapter that…well…how do I phrase this? The book would be better without it.

A few quotes that challenged and inspired me:

“…sometimes the greatest things in our lives are born from the worst.”

“Mark Twain once quipped, “The secret of success is making your vocation your vacation.”

“God’s love does not give us permission to think about how great we are.”

“It’s amazing what we can understand in hindsight, isn’t it? With the clarity of distance, we know the answers to God’s questions.”

Great stuff.

The truths he writes is mixed with personal stories that illustrate the points.

I know the author.  We’ve met two or three times.  He’s done work several times for Positive Alternative Radio. I like the guy.

But in chapter 7, he strays off the path.

In chapter 7 he writes, “I realized that Jesus never once asked someone to wear the name leader.”

The author is Mike Donehey of the band Tenth Avenue North. He’s a great guy.

He makes a super point that leadership isn’t the goal of a Christian’s life, but serving Jesus is. I agree 100%. I’m all in.

Donehey had a bad experience with the title leader, so his argument is against that backdrop.

But to say Jesus never asked someone to wear the name leader?
Leadership is all over the Bible.
God called Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt.
Abraham was to the father of a nation.
Joshua was called to lead after Moses.
Jesus was a leader where he held influence over twelve disciples.
When there was a dispute about the gentiles becoming Christians, the apostles and elders met in Jerusalem to answer the question.
Paul writes Timothy to set up leaders over churches and even gives qualifications.
Scripture is full of leaders and leadership.

Should leadership be our all in all? Nope. Jesus should be.
Should our identity be as a leader? Nope. Our identity is in Him.

Donehey’s book, Finding God’s Life for My Will: His Presence is the Plan, is excellent.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Read this book.
Let it encourage your heart.

I appreciate the book and I’m thankful Mike wrote it.

That’s book #1 for 2020.
51 more books to go to hit 52 for the year.

Remember, all leaders are readers.

If you want to be a better leader…be a reader.
