08 Jun Edge: Turning Adversity into Advantage | Laura Huang
2020: Book #9
How do you turn a presupposed weakness into a strength?
If you think people see you as inexperienced, but you feel you’re qualified for the job, how do you pivot so that inexperience is seen as a strength?
That’s the premise of “Edge: Turning Adversity into Advantage” by Laura Huang.
This is a powerful book.
It should be a must read for every college graduate and leader.
None of us have arrived.
Whether it’s immaturity, a physical ailment, or some blind spot – there is no person who makes progress without struggle.
Huang presents an interesting theory that we are to embrace these weaknesses and cast them as opportunities to be better.
While a firm may tell a candidate that they lack experience, Huang would coach the person to say, “That may be true. But in my eyes, it gives you the opportunity to give me the experience I need and mold my thinking as to what is best for your organization.”
In that thinking, the person is embracing what is true but also overcoming it and making it a strength.
It wasn’t what I was expecting, but I did find it helpful.
I give it 3.5 stars out of a possible 5.
That’s book #9 for 2020.
43 more to go.
